![]() Russell arrived home unharmed, and I don’t regret sharing her profile. While I understand the uniqueness of the story that contributed to the outpouring of support Russell received, the headline attention didn’t represent the norm for missing Black people, especially Black women, who disappear or are kidnapped. For Russell’s heroic efforts, she was crowned a “Good Samaritan.” A lot of women would have pulled over to the shoulder if they saw a toddler strolling alone on a busy freeway, too. I feared copycats using a child as bait on a freeway to kidnap a woman traveling alone. The search included an increased number of law enforcement, partner agencies, detectives and FBI, and search parties, sending shock waves and fear for Hoover residents and many nationwide. Her parents, relatives and friends - including her boyfriend - pleaded for her safe return. On July 15, Russell reappeared at her parents’ home.ĭuring a recent press conference, Police Chief Nick Derzis of the Hoover, Ala., police department presented an insurmountable amount of evidence, including her call to the 911 dispatcher, surveillance footage, street and traffic cameras that showed her movements before her disappearance.ĭays before Russell’s alleged kidnapping, her Google searches included information about Amber Alerts, how to take money from a cash register without being caught, a one-way bus ticket from Birmingham to Nashville, and the movie, “Taken,” which is a story about the kidnap of a teenaged girl.ĭerzis said Russell’s toxicology report didn’t indicate drug use, and currently, they have no reason to suspect a mental illness. I’m referring to the mysterious case of 25-year-old Carlethia “Carlee” Russell, a nursing school student who went missing on July 13 for more than 48 hours after reporting seeing an unaccompanied toddler on the side of a major Alabama highway. Only for your abduction to have been a hoax after detectives blasted gaping holes into your entire story, I’ll add. ![]() “Dang, Sis, why did you take us through all this stress and emotion,” a social media post read. ![]()
